about

"Ghost Mall" is the title number of a performance piece, which correlates the decline of a suburban shopping plaza with the breakdown of our debt-ridden economy.

Recorded live at the Brooklyn International Performance Art Festival

July 6, 2013

lyrics

Almost every weekend
We’d go down to the mall
Spencer’s, K-Mart,
Hobbytown, y’all!
Then, one rainy day in the summer of ’05.
I went down to the mall, and when I arrived
Shoppers crowded the corridors shouting, “This blows!”
They couldn’t understand why half the stores were closed!
I wondered what they wondered
What the hell happened here?!
This mall used to be
the pride and joy of Revere!

This mall used to hum
This mall used to spark
You couldn’t see the floor
There was no place to park
If they close one store,
They can close ‘em all!
Till this whole shabby town
Ain’t nothing but a ghost mall!

See how the money rolls out!

Don’t touch what you can’t buy
There’s no money in the till
They had to drain the fountain
‘cause they couldn’t pay the bill
Still, we tossed in our coins
Though we never knew why
And we kept on wishing
When the well had run dry.
Stealing from the fountain
is a criminal offense,
So I got a misdemeanor
For snatching fifty cents!

This mall used to hum
This mall used to spark
Now nobody comes
The corridors are dark
See the lights go down.
See the metal grates fall.
Till this whole shabby town
Ain’t nothing but a ghost mall

See how the money rolls out!

Back in the day
We bought everything on credit
Never thought we had to pay
Never thought we might regret it
Didn’t care how much we spent
We ran right out and bought it
Till we couldn’t make the rent
Tell me, who would’ve thought it?!

This mall used to hum
This mall used to spark
Now nobody comes
the corridors are dark
See the lights go down
See the metal grates fall
Till this whole shabby town
Ain’t nothing but a ghost mall!
See how the money rolls out

We bought big ass houses
In Hamilton and Dover
but the mortgage went pop
and the party was over!
The bank took the houses
And the nation did fall
Now we’re living hand to mouth
Shopping here at the ghost mall!

This mall used to hum
This mall used to spark
Now nobody comes
the corridors are dark
See the lights go down
See the metal grates fall
Till this whole shabby town
Ain’t nothing but a ghost mall

This mall used to hum
This mall used to spark
Now nobody comes
the corridors are dark
If they close one store
They can close ‘em all
Till this whole shabby town
Ain’t nothing but a ghost mall

See how the money rolls out!
See how the money rolls out!
See how the money rolls out!
See how the money rolls out!
